The Mathers Place project was a high priority action of Jan Gehl's Urban Design Plan for Hobart City.
This project involved the removal of 6 car parks adjacent to the State Library to create a new green gathering space for Hobartians and visitors. The connected laneways are important pedestrian linkages within the City Centre. The design included wayfinding signage and spatial changes that clarified pedestrian routes. The sunken U-shaped seating area provides a flexible outdoor gathering space for a range of events from markets to street theatre.
